Leaves left on a lawn through a GTA winter do not simply decompose politely. They mat down under snow, hold moisture against the crown of the grass, and block light and air for five months. What comes out from under the snow in April is a compressed grey layer and, very often, snow mould in patches across the turf beneath it. Beds have their own version. Perennials left standing collapse into a wet mass over winter and become a hospitable place for disease and rodents to sit out the cold, right against the foundation. Leaves packed into a bed hold water where you least want it. Spring is the other half of the problem. Everything winter did is still lying there - broken branches, sand and grit thrown onto beds from the driveway, matted leaf litter, road salt at the lawn edge. Turf trying to green up under that debris starts the season already behind, and weeds get a clear run at the openings. Neither cleanup is cosmetic. They are the two visits that determine what condition everything else on the property starts in.
