A sprinkler system that waters the driveway, misses the corner by the fence, and leaves a brown ring around every head is not broken. It was built that way. Heads spaced wrong never overlap properly, which is the entire principle irrigation runs on - each head is supposed to throw far enough to reach the next one. Zoning is the other design failure. Sun and shade need different amounts of water. Beds and turf need different amounts of water. When all of it sits on one zone, somebody loses: either the shaded beds are drowning or the sunny turf is burning, and the controller cannot fix a problem that was built into the pipe layout. Then there is the running that never gets questioned. A stuck valve or a cracked lateral leaks continuously underground, and the first sign is a suspiciously green patch and a water bill nobody can explain. Heads get clipped by mowers, sink below grade, or rotate out of alignment and spray the fence for two seasons before anyone notices. The one that actually destroys systems in Ontario is winter. Water left in a line freezes and expands, and it does not care what the pipe is made of. Valves crack, fittings split, and heads blow apart. That damage is entirely avoidable and entirely seasonal - the blowout is not optional here.
