A lawn that only ever gets mowed is a lawn slowly losing. Cutting removes growth; it does not replace what the plant is spending to produce that growth. Over a few seasons the turf thins, weeds fill the openings, and the colour goes flat no matter how neatly it is trimmed. Most of the damage is done by habits that feel like good care. Cutting too short is the biggest one - short grass has short roots, and short roots cannot reach water in a July dry spell. Dull blades tear the leaf instead of slicing it, leaving a ragged edge that browns off and invites disease. Cutting the same direction every week trains the grass to lean and compacts the same wheel lines. GTA soil adds its own problem. Clay compacts hard, and compacted soil means water runs off instead of soaking in, roots cannot spread, and the lawn effectively lives in a shallow tray. Add chinch bugs in a hot dry August or grubs feeding on the roots in September, and a lawn that was only ever mowed has no reserves to recover. The result is a yard that gets cut every week and still looks worse each year.
