Siding gets all the attention because it is the part you look at. Flashing is the thin metal detail tucked behind it at every transition - where the roof meets the wall, above windows and doors, at deck ledgers, around chimneys. The classic GTA example is a missing kickout flashing where a roof edge dies into a wall. Without it, every rainfall funnels a concentrated stream of water directly behind the cladding at that exact spot. From the street the house looks perfect. Inside the wall, the sheathing is turning to compost. Siding has its own failure list. Wind lifts and cracks panels along exposed elevations. Fasteners work loose through freeze-thaw. Panels installed too tight buckle in summer heat and pull apart in a February cold snap. Impact damage from a ladder or a hailstorm opens a path that nobody seals.
