New flooring installed over an unaddressed subfloor is a countdown. The material is fine. The problem is that it is being asked to sit flat on something that is not flat, dry on something that is not dry, or solid on something that flexes every time somebody walks past. Unevenness is the most common. A subfloor with dips and high spots puts point loads on click-lock joints, and those joints separate. You get gaps that were not there at installation, planks that lift at the edges, and a hollow sound in exactly the spot where the floor is not supported. Moisture is the more expensive one, and in the GTA it usually means basements. Concrete slabs release vapour continuously, and without a proper barrier that moisture goes into whatever is on top of it. Hardwood cups, engineered product delaminates, laminate swells at the seams and never goes back. Squeaks are the diagnostic. That noise is subfloor moving against a joist or a fastener that has worked loose - which means it was moving before the new floor went on, and it will keep moving after. Covering it changes nothing except how long before you find out.
